With assistance of the LAS Tbilisi Bureau lawyer, Khatuna Chkhaidze, Murtaz T. who was accused of escape from the penitentiary institution, was fully acquitted by the court.
In 1978, Murtaz T. was sentenced to 8 years of restriction of liberty and to serve his punishment in one of the labor camps. On December 14, 1983, it was found out that Murtaz T. was not in the penitentiary institution. As a result of the operative measures, his location was not identified. Murtaz T. was announced in search and as a preventive measure he was sentenced to imprisonment in absentia.
There were not any direct or indirect proofs in the case showing his incriminating act. However, the prosecutor demanded from the court to render guilty verdict and sentence him restriction of liberty in length of 4 years.
As a wanted, Murtaz T. was appointed a public lawyer. The public lawyer, Khatuna Chkhaidze, demanded from the court to render a verdict of acquittal as there were no reliable, undoubted, direct evidences in the case.
Finally, Tbilisi City Court shared the position of the public lawyer and rendered a verdict of acquittal for Murtaz T.
