Tajikistan and Belarus Joint Delegation Paid a Visit to Legal Aid Service

On October, 2018, Legal Aid Service hosted representatives of Tajikistan and Belarus. The meeting was a part of a study visit with the aim to get introduced with the juvenile justice system of Georgia.

Director of the Service Meliton Benidze gave the guests a presentation on the legal aid system. He informed the attendees about the structure of the Service, its mandate, territorial coverage, statistics of the delivered services, annual budget, insolvency criteria of beneficiaries, as well as functions of Legal Aid Council. The deputy director of Legal Aid Service, Irakli Shonia, who is actively involved in juvenile justice reform in Georgia, made the presentation on providing legal assistance for minors. At the end of the meeting, the delegation members asked several questions on topics they were interested in and received detailed answers from the hosts.

The study visit of Tajikistan and Belarus delegations is organized with the support of the EU-UNDP joint program “Development of the Child-Friendly Justice System in Georgia”. The Tajikistan delegation is comprised of the representatives from the Supreme Court, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Education and Science, Office of the Human Rights Commissionaire, as well as OSCE and UNICEF local offices and the Belarus delegation included the representatives of UNICEF local office, Nation Center for Legislation and Legal Research, Ministry of Justice, Bar Association, Prosecution, Minsk City Court, Supreme Court, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Healthcare.

During the visit, which is scheduled from 8 to 11 October, the delegations will carry out meetings with Crime Prevention Center of Ministry of Justice, Chief Prosecutor’s Office, and National Probation Agency. The meetings on juvenile justice issues will also be held with Human Rights Department of Ministry of Internal Affairs, with judges of Tbilisi City and Appellate Courts and Rustavi City Court.
