On April 15, the Director of the Legal Aid Service (LAS), David Simonia, introduced the LAS project "Paralegals" to the students of Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University (TSU).
The project aims to retrain paralegals so that they can provide primary legal advice to the population. In addition, paralegals can also assist the Service in interacting with the community. This method significantly facilitates and makes it more effective to increase the accessibility of the Legal Aid Service to the general public.
Any interested person can participate in the project since paralegals are not lawyers or law students; having a particular profession or activity is not required; all that is needed is the desire and motivation to fully understand the program LAS has planned, and to build strong relationships with the public.
As part of the project, LAS has established a network of paralegals in the Adjara, Imereti, and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions. TSU students will be the first to be recruited as paralegals in Tbilisi.
The head of the Tbilisi Legal Aid Bureau, Giorgi Chakvetadze, answered the students' enquiries and gave them comprehensive information on the LAS current services.
